Vancouver Island with Kids

The local's guide to family adventures

Vancouver Island is genuinely one of the best family destinations in Canada. The beaches are safe and shallow, the activities are genuinely fun for all ages, and the island has a pace of life that makes holidays feel like actual holidays. Here's what to do with kids from someone who knows every corner of it.

Start the Trip Right — On the Ferry

If you're coming from the mainland, the BC Ferries crossing is part of the experience — not just transportation. Kids love it. There are multiple decks to explore, outdoor viewing areas for spotting seals and eagles, and White Spot on board. The famous Pirate Pak — a kids' meal served in a little pirate ship with a burger, fries, chocolate pudding, and a chocolate gold coin — has been a BC children's rite of passage for decades. Order it. They will remember it.

Ferry tip: Book your sailing in advance in summer. Walk-on passengers can usually get on without booking but vehicle spots fill up fast. If you're driving, book weeks ahead in July and August.

Parksville — The Best Beach on the Island for Families

Parksville Beach is the single best family beach on Vancouver Island. The reason is simple: at low tide, the ocean recedes up to a kilometre and leaves behind vast shallow warm pools perfect for young children. The water temperature in summer is genuinely warm by BC standards. Kids can play for hours.

While you're in Parksville

Coombs — A Must Stop for Every Family

Goats on the Roof at the Old Country Market in Coombs is genuinely one of those things that makes children's eyes go wide. Real goats living on the grass roof of a building. They're up there year round. The market underneath is excellent — local produce, cheese, a bakery, and enough variety to keep everyone happy. Stop here on the way to or from Tofino.

While you're in Coombs, Billy G's Donut Shop is right nearby. Freshly made donuts. Do not skip it.

Victoria — History, Gardens, and Harbour Seals

Butchart Gardens is spectacular for children — the sunken garden, the fountain shows, and in summer the Saturday night fireworks are genuinely magical. Book in advance. The evening illuminations are worth staying for.

The Inner Harbour has harbour seals that hang around the docks year round. The Royal BC Museum is excellent for older children. The miniature train at Beacon Hill Park is a classic. Victoria is very walkable and family friendly throughout.

Wildplay Nanaimo — For Older Kids and Adventurous Families

Wildplay Element Parks in Nanaimo offers aerial obstacle courses, zip lines, and the famous Bungy Zone — one of only a handful of legal commercial bungee jumping operations in Canada, right over the Nanaimo River. For families with older kids or teenagers looking for genuine adventure, this is one of the best activities on the island. Book ahead — it gets busy in summer.

Westwood Lake — Nanaimo's Hidden Family Gem

Most visitors to Nanaimo don't know about Westwood Lake. It's a beautiful freshwater lake right in the city with a campground, swimming area, and kayak and paddleboard rentals available directly from the campground. A perfect half day for families who want calm water and nature without driving anywhere.
