The Tofino Run

Everything a local knows about driving Highway 4

I've driven the Highway 4 corridor from Nanaimo to Tofino over 50 times. It's one of the most spectacular drives in Canada — and one of the most unforgiving if you're not prepared. Here's everything you need to know before you leave.

The Route Overview

The drive from Nanaimo to Tofino is approximately 200km and takes around 3 hours without stops — but nobody does it without stops, and you shouldn't either. The route takes you through Parksville, west through Coombs and Qualicum Falls, into Port Alberni, through Cathedral Grove, past Sproat Lake, and then the dramatic final stretch to the coast.

Local tip: Leave Nanaimo or Parksville by 9am if you're going in peak summer. The single-lane sections around Cathedral Grove back up badly by midday.

The Dead Zone — What Nobody Tells You

This is the most important section of this guide. There is a 60 to 90 minute stretch of zero cell service on the way to Tofino that catches visitors completely off guard every year.

Where it starts

Cell service begins degrading just outside Errington, heading west on Highway 4. By the time you reach Coombs you're getting patchy. Make all your calls and download your offline maps before you leave Parksville — that's your last reliable signal.

Cathedral Grove

No cell service here, but stop anyway. MacMillan Provincial Park contains some of the most ancient old-growth Douglas fir and Western Red Cedar trees in BC — some over 800 years old. It's a 10 minute stop that most people say is one of the highlights of their whole trip. Don't skip it because you're worried about time.

The long dead zone

From past Sproat Lake all the way to the Highway 4 T-junction (where you choose Tofino or Ucluelet) there is essentially zero cell service. This stretch takes 60-90 minutes depending on conditions and stops. You are completely off grid.

Before you enter the dead zone: Download Google Maps offline for the Port Alberni to Tofino area. Download Maps.me as a backup — it works with zero data. Tell someone your expected arrival time. Fuel up in Port Alberni — it's the last reliable fuel stop before the coast.

Essential Stops on the Way

Coombs — Old Country Market

Goats on the Roof is exactly what it sounds like — real goats living on the grass roof of the Old Country Market. Stop here. The market inside is genuinely excellent — local cheese, fresh produce, a bakery, and a deli. While you're there, Billy G's Donut Shop is right nearby and worth every calorie. This is also your last chance for a relaxed stop before things get more remote.

Port Alberni — Fuel Up

Do not skip Port Alberni if you need fuel. It is the last reliable fuel stop before the coast. The drive from Port Alberni to Tofino on a low tank is not the kind of adventure you want. Fill up. Every time. No exceptions.

Cathedral Grove — MacMillan Provincial Park

Free to enter, right on the highway, 10 minutes minimum. Ancient old-growth forest that makes you feel genuinely small. The main trail is accessible and well maintained. Go.

The T-Junction — Tofino or Ucluelet?

At the end of Highway 4 you reach a T-junction. Left is Ucluelet (18km), right is Tofino (34km). Most visitors go to Tofino — it's bigger, more developed, more famous. But Ucluelet is worth knowing about — quieter, more affordable, equally stunning coastline, and arguably more authentically west coast. The Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet is one of the best coastal hikes on the island.

The Drive Back

The drive back is the same route in reverse but feels completely different — you're seeing everything from the other side, the light is usually different, and you know what's coming. One thing to note: afternoon traffic through Cathedral Grove in summer can be significant. If you're leaving Tofino after 3pm on a summer weekend, budget extra time.
