Best Hikes on Vancouver Island

Honest recommendations from a local

Vancouver Island has some of the best hiking in Canada — old growth rainforest, dramatic coastal cliffs, ancient trees, and hidden waterfalls. Here are the hikes worth doing, with honest difficulty ratings and the things the trail apps don't tell you.

Nanaimo & Central Island

Amonite Falls Easy

Distance: 2.5km return | Time: 45-60 minutes

A beautiful waterfall hike just outside Nanaimo that most visitors completely overlook. The trail follows Little Qualicum River through old growth forest to a stunning series of falls. Accessible year round, genuinely impressive after rain, and rarely crowded. One of the best short hikes on the island.

Mount Benson Moderate

Distance: 10km return | Time: 3-4 hours

Nanaimo's local mountain. The summit gives you 360-degree views of the city, the Strait of Georgia, and the mainland mountains. Multiple trail options from different access points. Go on a clear day — the view is the whole point.

Parksville & Qualicum Area

Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park Easy

Distance: 3-5km depending on route | Time: 1-2 hours

Two dramatic waterfalls — upper and lower — connected by forest trails. The lower falls are accessible in about 20 minutes from the parking lot. Stunning in any season. One of the most photographed spots in the area and completely deserving of the reputation.

Tofino & West Coast

Radar Hill Easy

Distance: 0.5km | Time: 15 minutes

Short walk to a panoramic viewpoint over Clayoquot Sound. One of the best views on the entire island for minimal effort. Go at sunset if you can.

Tonquin Trail Easy-Moderate

Distance: 3km | Time: 1-1.5 hours

Winds through Tofino's old growth forest to a series of hidden beaches. The beach access at the end makes this one of the most rewarding short hikes on the west coast. Combine with a sunset at Tonquin Beach.

The Airplane Wreck Hike — Cougar Annie's Trail Moderate

Distance: Variable | Time: 2-3 hours

One of Tofino's most unique hikes leads to the wreckage of a World War II era plane in the rainforest. The combination of old growth forest, coastal scenery, and the eerie plane wreck makes this genuinely unlike anything else on the island. Slightly harder to find — download the route offline before you go.

West coast hiking tip: Weather changes fast on the west coast. Always bring a waterproof layer even on sunny mornings. The rainforest lives up to its name.

Victoria & South Island

East Sooke Regional Park — Coast Trail Hard

Distance: 10km one way | Time: 4-6 hours one way

One of the best coastal hikes in BC. Dramatic clifftops, sea stacks, tide pools, and potential whale sightings. The full coast trail is a serious day hike — go prepared. The shorter sections from Aylard Farm are more accessible and still spectacular.

Juan de Fuca Trail Hard

Distance: 47km total (section hiking available) | Time: 3-4 days full trail

The lesser-known alternative to the West Coast Trail — equally beautiful, less crowded, more accessible for day sections. China Beach and Botanical Beach sections are excellent standalone day hikes.
